Several parents in suburban Washington have appealed to the US Supreme Court to allow them to pull their children from elementary school classes that use books featuring LGBTQ characters. This comes after a court in Montgomery County, Maryland stopped allowing students to opt out of lessons, reported AP.

The parents claim that this policy violates their constitutional religious rights and that public schools can’t force kids to participate in classes that violate their faith. The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal from the parents on the same, the report added.

Some of the stories from elementary school classes include a family attending a pride parade, a girl introducing her uncle’s husband-to-be, the love story of a prince and a knight amid a battle against a dragon, a girl’s anxiety about giving a valentine to another girl, a transgender boy’s decision to share his gender identity with his family, etc.

The parents further said they be allowed to pull their children from sex education. They also pointed out that the district initially allowed parents to pull their children from classes but now it has been abruptly stopped.

The policy by the court in Montgomery County had led to protests in 2023. Several parents had testified at school board hearings about their religious obligations to keep their children from lessons on gender and sexuality that went against their faith.

The justices are expected to review the policy. However, it is unclear whether the case will be argued in the spring, or after the new term begins in October.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the school system urged the US Supreme Court justices to stay out of the case. They wrote that the books are a small part of the curriculum which “tell everyday tales of characters who experience adventure, confront new emotions, and struggle to make themselves heard.” They further stated that the themes found in these storybooks bear the same theme found in classic stories such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Peter Pan, the report added.
