England legend Gary Lineker has named his favourites for the Premier League crown in the 2024-25 season. The footballer-turned-sports broadcaster recently assessed the title race on The Rest is Football podcast. During the episode, Premier League icon Alan Shearer asked his fellow panel members if Liverpool had finally established themselves as the potential title winners.

“Is that it then, lads? Do you think it’s Liverpool’s now? Was this the weekend?” Shearer asked, as per multiple outlets. The all-time Premier League top scorer’s question sparked a quick response from Lineker.

“I think it’s hard to envisage Liverpool letting this slip,” the Barcelona icon said.

Liverpool were back to winning ways on January 19 with a 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. What was supposed to be a comfortable away win for The Reds turned out to be a nail-biting thriller as both sides remained goalless in the first 90 minutes of play. In added time, Darwin Nunez came to Liverpool’s rescue with a quick two-minute brace. The goals saw Liverpool extend their lead over second-placed Arsenal by six points with a game in hand.

A strong performance from Liverpool in West London made a believer out of Lineker. The former England striker acknowledged that things could take a turn in the future but Liverpool had the firepower to deal with such complications.

“We know things can happen, things can change. But they’ve got a big, very strong squad, with replacements in every position,” he said.

Lineker also opined that the Merseyside club had all the right ingredients for a successful league triumph and there was no one left to challenge them for the title.

“They’ve got a belief, a momentum and a coach who knows what he’s doing. It’s hard to see really because who is going to come from behind and win almost every game which you would probably have to do now?” he said.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal dropping crucial points on Saturday against Aston Villa gave Liverpool firm control of the Premier League title race. Despite taking a 2-0 lead at the Emirates Stadium, The Gunners were held back by late goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins. Arsenal’s draw allowed Liverpool to potentially secure an eight-point lead this weekend. They are scheduled to take on Ipswich Town at Anfield.
