North India has experienced bright sunshine over the past two days, providing significant relief from the cold. However, for those assuming that winter is coming to an end, it’s time to reconsider.

The Meteorological Department has clarified that winter is here to stay, at least for another week in January, with rain expected in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir from Wednesday, January 22.

On Sunday, January 19, the maximum temperature in Delhi-NCR was recorded at 20 degree Celsius, the highest January temperature since 2020. Many believed it signalled the end of winter, but that is not the case as per the IMD.

The Met Department says a western disturbance is currently affecting North India. Winds originating from the Mediterranean Sea are set to bring rain to several Indian states on January 22 and 23, which may also lead to snowfall in the valleys of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Snowfall in these mountainous regions is expected to intensify the cold in the plains.

According to the Meteorological Department, this disturbance will likely result in lower temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, and other states.

In cities like Ludhiana and Patiala in Punjab, the minimum temperature could dip below 5 degree Celsius, while Delhi is expected to experience lows of around 9 degrees. Similar conditions are predicted for Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram, Sonipat, and Bahadurgarh.

The rain will also bring relief from pollution. Residents of Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana can expect improved air quality following the rainfall. On the morning of January 21, the AQI (Air Quality Index) levels across Delhi ranged between 200 and 250, categorised as hazardous. Post-rainfall, AQI levels are anticipated to drop to around 100, offering significant relief.

Neighbouring states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience improved air quality.
